Hamline's Teacher Leadership in TESOL certificate is designed for experienced English-language teachers to hone their leadership skills in a convenient online format.
In this online certificate in TESOL leadership, you'll learn:
- Sociopolitical issues that impact multilingual learners, including current immigration and education policy
- Approaches to advocacy at the school, district, state, and national levels
- Strategic planning for system-wide change
- Methods for working alongside school administrators to contribute a TESOL perspective to decision-making
Additionally, you'll practice skill-building in peer instructional coaching and network with your peers and faculty mentors during our synchronous online classes.

Start dates and application deadlines
We review applications on a rolling basis, meaning you can apply anytime. The Teacher Leadership in TESOL program has two starts per year during the fall and summer terms. We recommend applying at least six weeks before the term begins to ensure your spot.
Teacher Leadership in TESOL program format
All classes in Hamline’s Teacher Leadership in TESOL certificate are held online with synchronous (everyone meets together) and asynchronous components. This allows you to enjoy the flexibility and convenience of an entirely online TESOL leadership program while still enjoying the benefits of networking with your peers and faculty mentors.
Synchronous classes are typically held one weekday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
Time to complete your online TESOL leadership certificate
Course requirements for the Teacher Leadership in TESOL program could be completed in as little as 2 terms or 7 to 9 months.
Teacher Leadership in TESOL courses
You’ll finish your TESOL leadership certificate after only three courses, including a choice of one or more courses co-sponsored by TESOL International Association (tesol.org).

How to apply to the Teacher Leadership in TESOL Certificate program
Applying to the Teacher Leadership in TESOL Certificate program is simple and only required if this is the first certificate you’ve applied for at Hamline or if you are not enrolled in another Hamline School of Education degree or certificate program.
- Online application (no fee)
- Official transcript of a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 2.5 from a regionally accredited college or university.
- This should be sent directly from the institution to Graduate Admission or provided in a sealed, signed envelope. Official electronic transcripts should be emailed from the institution to gradprog@hamline.edu.
- You do not have to supply transcripts for courses taken at Hamline University.
- Candidates for this program must have a credential to teach English as a Second Language.

The flagship course in this certificate program, "Teacher Leadership in TESOL," is also offered through TESOL International Association. Successfully completing this course, whether through TESOL International or Hamline, allows you to apply it toward your Hamline certificate and earn valuable graduate credit to further your career.
