Hamline’s Writing Scholarship is designed to reward students for their interest and skill in writing. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can get up to $3,000, which is renewable for three years. Whether you consider yourself an aspiring writer or simply enjoy creative writing in your free time, we hope you’ll submit an application no matter your intended major at Hamline. Still thinking about what to major in?  Creative Writing Programs at Hamline include a BFA in Creative Writing that’s the only one of its kind in the Twin Cities. You’ll learn how to analyze poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction while creating your own works. We also offer a BA in English and communication studies if you are interested in the intersection of creative expression and communication skills.

Writing scholarship criteria

Wondering how to get a writing scholarship and if you’re eligible to apply? Students have to submit their admission materials and receive an offer of admission to Hamline before applying for any departmental scholarships. The Writing Scholarship is open to any student with a demonstrated aptitude for writing, regardless of major.

Applicants will be reviewed based on the strength of their submitted writing sample and how they communicate their passion for writing through their artist’s statement.

To renew the Hamline writing scholarship annually, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
