Vikings down Pipers despite strong kill totals

The Pipers lost by set scores of 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-27, 16-14.

The opening set of the match saw even play up to a 20-20 score. Then a trio of kills by Sam Greeney-Hamlin (Fy., St. Cloud, Minn.) and a Vikings error put the Pipers up 24-20.

Up 24-22, Shannon Schmidt (Jr., Bismark, N.D.) finished off the set for Hamline with a kill.

Bethany Lutheran climbed out to leads of 12-6 and 21-13 in the second set. The Vikings then took the final four points of the set to even the match.

In the third set, with the score tied at 21-21, Bethany Lutheran won four of the last six points to go up 2-1 in the match.

Hamline trailed 9-6 in the fourth set when Anna Murie (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) had a kill for a sideout. Hamline then used four Bethany Lutheran errors to go up 10-9.

The host Vikings took seven of the next eight to go up 16-11. However, the Pipers closed to within one, 16-15, with three more Greeny-Hamlin kills and a Bethany Lutheran error.

Late in the set, Bethany Lutheran led 25-24, but Sammy Redman (Fy., Rochester, Minn.), Greeney-Hamlin, and Schmidt each had a kill to close out the set to even the match.

In the fifth, and final, set, Hamline led 4-3. The Vikings strung together five points to lead 8-5, and controlled until a Piper string of five points put them up, 13-12.

Bethany Lutheran would go on to win four of the next five points, though, to win the set and the match.

Greeney-Hamlin led the Pipers with 13 kills, Murie had 12, and Schmidt added 10 kills. Heidi Larsen (Sr., Andover, Minn.) had 26 digs.

Hamline drops to 9-13, 2-4 MIAC with the non-conference loss.
