Krebs and Thomsen Took Second Place in Song Slam

Kelly Krebs writes songs when he is not working with transfer students at Hamline University. On Thursday, January 10 his song, “Cliff Notes From Your Mother on Leaving Home” took second place in the 2019 Song Slam (think Poetry Slam but with songs) at Icehouse Mpls. Hamline Piano Professor Kathy Thomsen accompanied singer Melody Mendis for the performance.

Krebs said, “The Song Slam is a unique opportunity for composer-performer teams to premiere new art songs and compete for cash.”

This was the second year for the Song Slam in Minneapolis. The competition pits ten songs for piano against each other during an evening of performance hosted by musician, composer and performer Chris Koza. The event was produced by the Source Song Festival in collaboration with Sparks and Wiry Cries the Art Song Magazine.

Thomsen enjoyed her evening behind the keyboard.

“I was thrilled to have been part of this very fun event at the Icehouse, and I’m so pleased for Kelly. He deserves every award there is for his compositions,” Thomsen said.
