2017-2018 Loft Mentor Series

The Loft logo 250The Loft Mentor Series in Poetry and Creative Prose offers twelve emerging Minnesota writers the opportunity to work intensively with six nationally acclaimed writers of prose and poetry. Selected participants work throughout the year with the six mentors, and all participants and  mentors give public readings at the Loft. Dates for those readings will be announced in Spring. 

Congratulations to all writers selected this year, including two MFA alums who have been named fellows and seven more as finalists. 

Nonfiction

Winner: Joan Maeda Trygg (MFA 05)

Joan Maeda Trygg  has published essays in Cheers to Muses: Contemporary Works by Asian American Women, Journal of the Asian American Renaissance, and the 2017 St. Paul Almanac. She participated in Ghost Stories: Five Women Writers Read Works on Historical Trauma, and in the 2013 Beyond the Pure Grant from Intermedia Arts. She received an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Hamline University in 2005.

Finalists in Nonfiction include CWP alums Laura Theobald (MFA '11) and Lucas McMillan (current MFA).

Poetry

Winner: Hallie Wiederholt (MFA '13)

Hallie Wiederholt ’s poems have appeared in Sleet Magazine, DIAGRAM, Adrienne, and elsewhere. She received Honorable Mention in the 2015-2016 Loft Mentor Series for Poetry and was chosen by Billy Collins for the 2016 Key West Literary Seminar Writers’ Workshop. She is the Assistant Poetry Editor for Midway Journal.

Finalists in Poetry include Hamline's own Ariane Sanford (MFA '17), Sara Krassin (MFA '16), Donna Isaac (MFA '07), and Sarah Hayes (MFA '11).

Fiction

CWP's own Alison Morse (MFA '06) and Lucas McMillan (current MFA) were both finalists in Fiction.
