Dr. John Matachek Named Interim Provost

Dr. John Matachek, Dean of the Hamline University College of Liberal Arts for the past six years and long-time faculty member of the College, has been named Hamline’s Interim Provost by Hamline University President Dr. Fayneese Miller. The appointment is effective August 1, 2015.

“Dr. Matachek is admirably well qualified to assume this role, having already served in this capacity for some months in 2012,” said Dr. Miller. “I appreciate his willingness to contribute the considerable time and effort involved in this undertaking and look forward to working with him in this interim role.”

A member of the College of Liberal Arts chemistry faculty for more than 25 years, Dr. Matachek served as department chair for 11 years and as the science division coordinator and co-director of the biochemistry program before becoming dean. He has provided leadership to several significant efforts—helping to establish the Budget Advisory Council, chairing key searches including most recently the search for the Senior Vice President for Business, Finance and Technology, and serving as the first president of the university’s Faculty Council.

As Interim Provost, Dr. Matachek will serve as the chief academic officer of the university, providing leadership through the establishment of academic priorities, the support of existing and the development of new innovative academic programs, and the supervision of academic deans and the dean of students. He also will be responsible for the undergraduate and graduate student experience, oversee the libraries and the international and diversity programs at the university, and carry out other duties and responsibilities.

In this role, Dr. Matachek will serve on the President's Staff and the University Leadership Team, chair the Deans Council, and staff the Academic and Student Affairs Committees of the Board of Trustees.

An announcement about an Interim Dean for the College will be forthcoming.
