Pipers stand strong but fall in three to #11 Oles

The Oles, ranked #11 in the most recent AVCA national poll, won by set scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-23.

St. Olaf jumped out to a quick start off the bus, taking a 6-2 lead in the opening set. They never let the Pipers back in to the opener, and took the 1-0 lead.

The Oles once again took an early 2-0 lead in the second set, but Hamline quickly evened up the scoreboard, and then some. A service ace from Heidi Larsen (Sr., Andover, Minn.) and kills from Aisha Baker (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Sam Greeney-Hamlin (Fy., St. Cloud, Minn.) added up to a 3-2 Piper lead.

The score would go on to be tied at 3-3 and 4-4 before the Oles began to record some kills and capitalize on Piper mistakes to take a 13-6 lead. But the Pipers battled back, as well, as Shannon Schmidt (Jr., Bismark, N.D.) and Baker began to knock down kills to bring the Pipers to within one, 15-14.

Larsen then used another service ace to tied the score.

The set score would be tied again at each opportunity up to 20-20, but the Oles then tallied four in a row to get set point. An Ole error on their first set point kept Hamline in it, but Katie Wolfram (So., Woodinville, Wash.) put St. Olaf up 2-0 in the match with a kill.

The third set mirrored the second as the teams stayed close throughout the first half of the set. With the score tied 12-12, St. Olaf put together three in a row for a 15-12 lead.

The Oles would stay up by a minimum of three points until, while up 23-20, Hamline used an Anna Murie (Sr. Grand Forks, N.D.) ace and an Ole attacking error to get within one.

Molly Schroeder (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) used another kill on St. Olaf's first match point to keep the Pipers in the match, but a Kim Smisek (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) ultimately gave the Oles the 3-0 win.

Greeney-Hamlin recorded 12 kills to lead the Pipers while Smisek had 14 to lead St. Olaf.

Larsen is now within one dig of the 2,000 career digs milestone, as she had 12 in the match. Schmidt added 10 digs. Larsen also had four service aces in the match.

The Pipers are now 10-17, 2-8 MIAC while the Oles are 26-4, 9-1 MIAC after the conference contest. Hamline will close out the 2010 season on the road, playing at Bethel on Friday, October 29, at 7:00 p.m.
