Larsen digs deeper into record book as Pipers defeat Wildcats

Hamline won the match by set scored of 18-25, 25-13, 26-28, 25-20, 16-14.

Larsen originally set the school record for digs in a match last Saturday in a non-conference five-set match against the Wildcats in the Holiday Inn-vitational. She bettered her record by two, tallying 46 digs in today's match.

St. Catherine took an early 7-2 lead in the opening set and maintained it. The Pipers then turned the match around by opening up a 9-3 lead to start the second set.

The flip-flop in scoreboard advantage to start the set happened again in the third as the Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead. This time, the set did not easily go their way, as the teams played to an overtime score of 28-26.

Down set point at 24-17, Hamline would win the next seven points to even the score. Although the set would eventually fall to the side of the Wildcats, the momentum swing at the end of the set propelled the Pipers into the fourth.

St. Kate's and Hamline played each-other point-for-point until the Wildcats took a 10-7 lead. Down 11-10, Larsen put up a service ace to tie the score for the Pipers. They then turned the tables to take back the lead.

Hamline won the final three points of the set to even the match at 2-2 and set it into a fifth and deciding set.

In a very evenly matched and competitive fifth set with long rallies, the Pipers pulled out the win at 14-14 with a pair of kills from Aisha Baker (So., Minnetonka, Minn.).

Three Pipers produced double-digit kill numbers, led by 12 apiece from Molly Schroeder (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) and Sam Greeney-Hamlin (Fy., St. Cloud, Minn.). Baker had 10 kills.

Larsen had the record-setting 46 digs while Sammy Redman (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) had 46 set assists.

The Pipers are now 8-8, 1-2 MIAC while the Wildcats are 3-13, 1-2 MIAC. Hamline will play at Saint Mary's on Wednesday, September 29, at 7:00 p.m.
