Earl Schwartz's New Book Published

Hamline University’s Earl Schwartz, an assistant professor in the Department of Religion has published a new book titled, “The Arc of the Covenant: Jewish Educational Success on the Upper Mississippi.”

The book focuses on the second half of the twentieth century and examines the social, cultural, and political factors that contributed to exceptional Jewish educational success in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Schwartz said, “I wanted to explore how a relatively small Jewish population of limited resources enjoyed such success in the area of Jewish education. How did it happen, and how have circumstances changed in recent years?”

The book concerns a particular place and time, but the implications reach far beyond St. Paul and its Jewish community.

“I hope that the book can be helpful to Jewish educational planners locally and in other locales, as well as to educators in other communities,” said Schwartz.

A book release celebration will be held at the St. Paul Jewish Community Center (JCC) on Tuesday, September 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. All are welcome.
