Irina Makarevitch, professor of biology, Marcela Kostihova, professor of English, and Josh Gumiela, professor of digital media arts, along with the University of Minnesota’s Caroline Hilk, have published an article in the peer-reviewed journal Trends in Higher Education. The article was in a special issue, “AI Technology in Higher Education: A Matter of Fashion, Fetish, or Fantasy?”
The article argues that higher education must move beyond current restrictive, fragmented policies on generative AI and adopt an intentional, "human-in-the-loop" pedagogy. This means instructors would have to directly verify the accuracy of AI-generated content.
Based on analysis of syllabi and campus surveys, the authors identified a gap between faculty caution and actual AI use. They propose aligning assignments, policy and instruction to support ethical, transparent, and intellectually rigorous engagement with AI. Read the article here.
