Alumnus Named 2016 Minnesota Teacher of the Year

Abdul Wright, a graduate student in the Hamline School of Education, was named the 2016 Minnesota Teacher of the Year. The award is momentous for Wright, Hamline, and for Minnesota. Not only is he the first African-American man who has won the award, but he is also the first recipient who teaches at a charter school. He is also the second Hamline School of Education alumnus in as many years to earn the honor in Minnesota. You can watch Wright's interview on KARE11 News below.

Wright teaches language arts at The Best Academy in Minneapolis and simultaneously pursued his Master of Arts in Education from Hamline. He graduates on Saturday, May 21. As the 52nd recipient of the award, Wright was selected from 115 candidates ranging from prekindergarten to high school teachers. He received the honor from Education Minnesota, a statewide union of educators.

Last year, Hamline alumna Amy Hewett-Olatunde was named Minnesota's Teacher of the Year. Hewett-Olatunde earned both her Master of Arts in Education and her Doctorate of Education at Hamline. She was recently honored by President Barack Obama at the White House as part of National Teachers Appreciation Day. You can read more about Hewett-Olatunde on the School of Education's website
