COVID-19 Shift Plan Modified Level 4

Hamline University’s COVID-19 Shift Level is changing from Level Three to a modified Level Four effective immediately. UPDATE: On Wednesday evening, November 18, Minnesota Governor Walz issued an executive order that resulted in the closure of Klas Center, Hutton Arena, and Walker Field House on November 21. The full text of the notice from Emergency Operations can be found below.

Effective on Monday, November 23, all undergraduate and graduate academic operations will shift to online-only. Staff and faculty who presently need to report to work as part of their job function should continue to do so. Consult your supervisor if you have questions.

In addition:

Students who are traveling during the Thanksgiving holiday are asked not to return to the Hamline campus until they have completed a 14-day self-quarantine period at home. Online-only instruction should make this easier for everyone.

Students who do not plan to go home for Thanksgiving are asked to remain in their residence halls, leaving only for work, exercise or for day-to-day requirements such as groceries or needed supplies. Campus dining services will remain open through the holiday weekend on a to-go basis. Students should monitor their email for details as this is still being planned.

Individual/Pod workouts for student athletes (per NCAA phase one guidelines) will continue until further notice. Weight rooms and cardio equipment will remain open for all students, by appointment only, until further notice.

Piper XPress will remain open. Students should pick up their packages before leaving. Supervisors may make their own arrangements for package delivery and/or holding directly with Piper XPress for those items which are to be delivered after Monday, November 23.

We are entering a critical phase of the pandemic. As you have probably read and heard, the entire United States is experiencing heightened caseloads and hospitalizations in the “second surge” of COVID-19. We cannot stress these last items strongly enough:

Wear your mask. Hamline policy requires it and you may save yourself or your loved ones from contracting COVID-19.

Stay socially distant.

Avoid high-traffic areas. Try to stay in groups of ten or fewer people. We understand that holidays are for family -- however, what we found at Halloween was that large parties dramatically contributed to virus spread.

Also, Minnesota governor Tim Walz will announce additional restrictions on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. Hamline guidelines may be changed or updated to reflect state guidance upon little or no notice. Please monitor the university’s COVID-19 webpage and the Minnesota Department of Health website for more information.

November 18, 2020 update
