Martinez-Vaz and Students Present at ASBMB Conference

Dr. Betsy Martínez-Vaz, associate professor of biology and biochemistry, attended the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) in San Diego with Hamline students Brennon Fleagle, Aldina Imamovic, Joshua Slostad and Uriel Vazquez-Rios. They presented posters describing their collaborative research projects involving molecular analysis of bacterial viruses, characterization of cellulose-degrading enzymes, and exon sequencing to detect late on set Tay Sachs disease.

Slostad also was awarded an honorable mention out of 225 projects for his poster during the national undergraduate poster competition at ASBMB. His poster was titled "Exon Sequencing For the Presence of Late Onset Tay-Sachs," and was conducted in Professor Jodi Goldberg's laboratory.
