A Day of Reflection and Service in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

King-Big

On Tuesday, January 21, 2020 the Hamline University community will continue its tradition of commemoration and service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The morning will begin with a program to reflect upon Dr. King’s life, leadership and pursuit of racial and social justice. All are welcome to attend.

The commemoration event will focus on Dr. King’s speech titled “The Other America” that was first delivered at Stanford University in 1967 and again in slight variations through 1968. The speech explores the racial economic opportunity divide, realities that remain true in 2020.

The program will feature faculty, staff and student reflections from Professor Leticia Basford CLA/Education, staff member Becky Kaarbo (Student Affairs), undergraduate student leader Dieu Do, as well as readings, musical selections, and remarks from President Fayneese Miller.

Staff and students from The Hedgeman Center for Student Diversity Initiatives and Programs planned the commemoration program and a campus day of service to follow.

Associate Dean of Students and Hedgeman Center staff member Carlos Sneed said that “The Other America” speech was chosen as the focal point for the program because the content -- from the discussion of war, racial inequality and injustice, and a strategy for moving forward -- remains relevant today.

“In his concluding thoughts, King reminds us that "we are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny," which is a sentiment that offers a guiding light in these highly divisive times,” said Sneed.

The commemoration is free and open to the public. It will take place in the Anderson Center from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Link to press release.)

Following the Commemoration, members of the Hamline University community have an opportunity to purposefully transform King’s life and teachings into action through MLK Day of Service activities at The Ujamaa Place and The Hallie Q. Brown Center. Preregistration is required.
