Biography

Kate DeVoe is a freelance musician and educator in the Twin Cities. She plays with Brass Lassie (traditional Celtic music with jazz horn arrangements), Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble, and The Sunshapes. She has also performed with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, the Twin Cities Jazz Composers Workshop, Swing Sisterhood, The Satellites (R&B/soul cover band), Southwest Minnesota Orchestra, St Paul Civic Symphony, and The Roxxy Hall Band (blues/rock originals and covers). Kate has served as MN All State Band Trumpet Coach and has been teaching in the Twin Cities in 2004. She began teaching at Hamline in 2017. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from Augsburg College and a Master’s of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Minnesota, where she studied with David Baldwin, Gary Bordner, and Lynn Erickson.

Teaching Style

Kate takes a well-rounded approach to teaching. She incorporates fundamental skills in her teaching to address all aspects of trumpet playing and to promote efficiency and ease of playing. She puts a strong focus on developing a sense of musicianship within her students, allowing them to realize musical ideas beyond their technical training.
