Hamline's Creative Writing Program Shines at the Minnesota Book Awards

The winners of the 2021 Minnesota Book Awards were announced Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the 33rd Annual Celebration put on by The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library. Members of Hamline's creative writing community took home two of the night's big awards.

Creative Writing Program (CWP) adjunct faculty member Carolyn Holbrook won the Minnesota Book Award in the category of 'Memoir & Creative Nonfiction' for her book "Tell Me Your Names and I Will Testify: Essays." Holbrook is a teacher and founder of the More Than a Single Story discussion series. She is the recipient of Hamline University Exemplary Teacher Award, the Kay Sexton Award, and many arts fellowships and grants.

Daniel Bernstrom, an alum of Hamline's MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program, won the Minnesota Book Award in the category of 'Children's Literature' for his picture book "Big Papa and the Time Machine." Bernstrom is the author of "One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree," and "Gator, Gator, Gator!" He has a Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University. He lives in Red Wing.

Another Hamline MFAC Alum, Caren Stelson, was also a finalist in the 'Children's Literature' category for her book "A Bowl Full of Peace: A True Story."
