Professor Betsy Martinez-Vaz, Caleb Rosenthal '21 and Dean Young '23 Published

Biology and Biochemistry Professor Betsy Martinez-Vaz, Caleb Rosenthal '21, Dean Young '23, and collaborators from Bethel University and the University of Minnesota recently published a paper in the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education titled: "Development of the Organonitrogen Biodegradation Database: Teaching Bioinformatics and Collaborative Skills to Undergraduates during a Pandemic."

The article describes a fully remote undergraduate research experience designed to introduce students to data mining and bioinformatics skills while working as part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists. As part of the project, Caleb and Dean helped create an interactive web application that provides information about organonitrogen compounds commonly used in agriculture and their microbial degradation pathways. The Organonitrogen Biodegradation Database is freely available to the scientific community and the general public. The work that Dean Young contributed to the article was supported by the Hamline Summer Collaborative Research Program.
