Appleby Publishes on Connection between Disease and Ideology

Prof. Jake Appleby, the newest member of Hamline's Psychology Department, is a coauthor on a new paper in Political Psychology that extends work on the behavioral immune system to a new set of variables.

The paper "Exposure and Averrsion to Human Transmissable Diseases Predict Conservative Ideological and Partisan Preferences" shows across four studies that environmental levels of pathogens and perceived vulnerability to disease are both related to more conservative political indicators. The paper includes a study replicating this finding after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
