About the Book

Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All is a historical fiction novel from MFAC faculty member Laura Ruby. Loosely based on her mother-in-law's experiences as a child, the novel is set in 1941 ghost-filled Chicago, Thirteen Doorways follows two girls, one living and one dead, as Frankie navigates life in a Catholic orphanage. Frankie's journey of heartbreak and growing up is intertwined with those of the ghosts living in Chicago.

In another unique and expertly written novel, Laura Ruby tells a story that won't be easily forgotten.

Praise for Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All

"Ruby's delicate, powerful storytelling-it's as if each word carries deliberate weight-draws out potent connections among women living in different eras, and the places where their stories overlap captivatingly demonstrate the varied ways anger, love, strength, vengeance, and forgiveness appear. If that sounds esoteric, never fear: Ruby's well-wrought, multifaceted characters, both living and dead, are front and center of this moving novel." -Booklist, Starred Review

"Powerful plotting, masterful character development, and a unique narrative device set this work apart. Make room on the shelf next to Code Name Verity and The Book Thief." -School Library Journal, Starred Review
