Hamline Still Top Ranked; Moves Up in 2019 U.S. News Rankings

Hamline University moved up in its class and maintained its position as a top-ranked university according to U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2019 edition.

In addition to being recognized as one of the best regional universities in Minnesota, Hamline has been acknowledged to be among the best values in higher education and one of the best institutions for undergraduate teaching in the Midwest. It was also named to the list of A-plus Colleges for B students. U.S. News released its annual rankings list Monday.

“We are pleased to see an improvement in our overall rankings this year,” Hamline President Fayneese Miller said. “Positive rankings represent a recognition of the exceptional experience and value of the education Hamline offers to students and further affirms our ongoing mission to be Minnesota’s premier liberal arts university.”

Highlights of the rankings include:

Best in Minnesota
Hamline rose to thirteenth rank in 2019 from sixteenth last year among 172 institutions in the Best Regional Universities ‘Midwest’ category. Hamline is now tied with another Minnesota school, St. Catherine University, as well as Baldwin Wallace in Ohio and North Central in Illinois.

U.S. News’ Best Regional University category includes schools nationwide that award primarily undergraduate and master’s degrees and a small number of doctoral degrees. The U.S. News rankings are developed using student graduation and retention rates, social mobility, faculty resources, academic reputation, selectivity and other criteria.

Best Undergraduate Teaching
Hamline was ranked fourteenth and was one of three other regional universities in Minnesota to be recognized by academic experts at peer institutions for a strong faculty commitment to undergraduate teaching.

For this designation, experts from institutions who participated in the annual U.S. News peer assessment survey were asked to nominate up to 15 schools (up from as many as 10 in previous years) in their Best Colleges ranking category with a strength in undergraduate teaching.

Best Value in Midwest
Hamline was one of two Minnesota schools named to the Best Value Midwest list.

This ranking takes into account a school's academic quality, as indicated by its 2019 U.S. News Best Colleges ranking, and the 2017-2018 net cost of attendance for a student who received the average level of need-based financial aid.

A-plus Schools for B Students
Hamline was among the four schools in the state to earn a spot on the list of A-plus Schools for B Students. This category reflects institutional ranking, first-year student retention, and acceptance rate for students with academic potential that may not be reflected on their high school transcripts.
