Equity Unconference Returns to Anderson

Larger Ed camp

On Thursday, July 19th, David Everett, Hamline’s New Associate Vice President of Inclusive Excellence moderated the opening panel of Minnesota Equity Edcamp 2018, an unconference organized by Northeast Metro 916, a Minnesota School District. The panelists were Danielle Grant, President & CEO of AchieveMpls; J Klimek a student from Roseville Area Schools; Dr. George Hoagland, a visiting faculty member at Minneapolis College of Art and Design and board member of Philanthrofund Foundation (PFund); and, Cathy Cozad a parent of a non-binary gender child.

This was the second year that the Anderson Center hosted about 100 educators for a daylong unconference focused on equity. The unconference format is based on the idea that everyone is an educator and a leader. Minnesota Equity Edcamp is described as, “An educator-led, educator-driven gathering to share ideas, practices, and strategies about equity and education in Minnesota.”

The idea for edcamps began in 2010 and has evolved into a national movement to “build and support communities of empowered educators.”

Throughout the day, Minnesota Equity Edcamp attendees gathered in spaces around the building to exchange ideas and strategies on how to promote equity in the classroom. Participants could secure continuing education units (CEUs) or obtain graduate credit if they registered with Hamline.
