Hamline School of Business
professor Jim Scheibel recently won the highest possible award given for
volunteer service—the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award from AmeriCorps
Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA).
Scheibel was chosen for the
award based on his years of service to VISTA, advocacy, and volunteer work with
mentoring-partnership organizations. He received the plaque, signed by
President Barack Obama, during a ceremony held last summer for the 50th anniversary
of the VISTA program.
“I was on the steering
committee for the event, but it was a huge surprise when they asked me to stay up
on stage to receive the award,” Scheibel says. “I have a lifelong commitment to
building stronger communities through volunteer work. I like being a creator of
the community I live in, and what’s even better is working with people to
develop their leadership skills as co-creators.”
