Hamline Law improves significantly in U.S. News rankings

Fueled in part by strong graduate employment statistics, Hamline University School of Law has jumped 25 places on U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Law Schools” rankings and is now listed within the first tier of law programs in the United States. The 25-place improvement is one of the largest jumps by a law school in the 2014 U.S. News rankings, which were released today, and moves Hamline ahead of cross-town peer, William Mitchell.

Also significant is the continued strength of Hamline Law’s alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and health law programs. Hamline’s ADR program, anchored by the internationally-renowned Dispute Resolution Institute, was ranked fourth in the nation, marking the thirteenth consecutive year the program has been ranked in the top five nationally. The health law program, led by the school’s Health Law Institute, moved up one place to No. 16 in the national rankings, a feat made even more impressive by the increased national competition in the health law sector among U.S. law schools.

“We’re pleased that our efforts to provide our law students with a rigorous academic experience, personal attention, and real-world opportunities that equip them to be successful in their careers upon graduation have been recognized,” Hamline University President Linda Hanson said. “Additionally, I commend our dean and his faculty and staff on their outstanding accomplishments in building innovative, distinctive programs, such as the dispute resolution and health law programs, that position Hamline for success.”

A key factor in Hamline’s climb in the overall rankings was the emphasis on employment nine months after graduation in JD and JD advantage positions.

“Everyone at Hamline Law, led by our outstanding Career Services Office, has been focused on helping our graduates find meaningful jobs after graduation,” said Donald M. Lewis, dean of the law school. “This work has been very successful, and according to U.S. News, we had the best employment rate of any Minnesota law school. We are equally optimistic about the final report on our 2012 graduating class, which will be completed soon.”

The U.S. News “Best Law Schools” rankings include 194 ABA-accredited law schools throughout the nation. The rankings measure the law schools’ academic quality, peer assessment, assessment by lawyers and judges, selectivity, median LSAT scores, median undergraduate GPAs, acceptance rate, placement success, bar passage rate, faculty resources, expenditures per student, student-faculty ratio, and library resources.
