The Loft received 200 qualified entries to the 2012 Minnesota Emerging Writers’ Grant competition. This year, the Loft coordinated with Grub Street, an independent center for creative writing in Boston, to form a panel of five teaching artists to review the applications. They narrowed the field down to 20 finalists. From those 20, they selected five writers for the awards.

Grants were awarded to middle-grade novelist William Breen of Saint Paul; essayist Katie Hae Leo of Rochester; nonfiction writer Juliet Patterson of Minneapolis; poet Yuko Taniguchi of Rochester; and fiction writer Donna Trump of Minneapolis.
