The Violence Prevention Project Research Center (VPPRC) has received a two-year grant from the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs to study the effectiveness of Minnesota’s Extreme Risk Protection Orders, known as red flag laws.
The law, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2024, allows family members or law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms from individuals in crisis and considered a significant danger to themselves or others.
The study will use records and interviews to understand whether the law has reduced suicides and homicides in Minnesota.
The VPPRC will also hire a team of Hamline students in the fall of 2026 to assist with record coding. If interested, please reach out to Violence Prevention.
