Graduate Students Lobby Legislators on Behalf of Multilingual Learners of English

During the summer, graduate students Emilie Scott, Monica Turner, and Professor Michelle Benegas represented Hamline University at Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Advocacy Action Days. The three participated in a legislative conference hosted by TESOL International Association and lobbied to release Title III state formula grants – totaling a little more than $890 million – for English language education. The federal administration had withheld the funds, which were ultimately released.
