This business administration student makes mentorship her focus

Long before she was a New Student Mentor (NSM) at Hamline, Emily Welch '24 was guiding her peers through life.

Welch—a business administration: Marketing major and digital media arts minor student from Roger, Minnesota—took every opportunity she could get to help the people around her. She taught younger children through an education program at her church, became a peer mentor in her high school's leadership program, and got involved as an alumni with the Minnesota branch of Camp Kesem, a national nonprofit that supports children who have a parent with cancer.

"I found every opportunity to get involved in my community," Welch said. "It's something I found passion in; it kept me going."

The moment I stepped on campus, I knew I'd be welcomed and accepted here. (My New Student Mentors) were really good role models, and having that first engaging experience helped me feel at home."

By the time she arrived at Hamline, stepping into the shoes of her own NSM was a no-brainer, Welch said.

"The moment I stepped on campus, I knew I'd be welcomed and accepted here," she recalled of her own first-year mentors and orientation week."They were really good role models, and having that first engaging experience helped me feel at home."

Welch intends to use her degree to foster connectivity in the nonprofit sector. After a marketing internship experience in high school, she discovered the joy of graphic design and integrating the experiences of a company's employees into its public messaging.
