    Master your craft in an environment that’s designed to challenge you as much as it supports you. Dive deep into the study of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction while developing a breadth of knowledge to experiment across genres. Join a community of like-minded writers, guided by faculty members who are accomplished writers themselves.

    • Get published: Dozens of alumni and current students have gone on to publish work with both local and national publishing houses, and hundreds have placed work in literary magazines.
    • Edit real work: You’ll graduate prepared for a career in literary publishing, with the opportunity to serve on the editorial boards of Hamline’s literary magazines: Water~Stone Review, Runestone, and rock, paper, scissors. Students can also earn internships at Twin Cities presses including Coffee House Press, Graywolf Press, and Milkweed Editions.
    • Gain teaching experience: Study composition theory and pedagogy in preparation for a job as a writing tutor or English professor, and take advantage of the several teaching internships offered each semester.

    MFA in Creative Writing Overview

    Sound Like Trapped Thunder, the 2020 Deborah Tell Lyric Essay Book Prize by MFA alum Jessica Lind Peterson, will be celebrated with a virtual launch reading this Thursday, March 18 at 7 pm CT.

    Sheila O'Connor was named the recipient of 2020 Minnesota Book Award in the Novel & Short Story category for her book Evidence of V: A Novel in Fragments, Facts, and Fictions. O'Connor also won the Minnesota Book Award in this category in 2004 for her novel Where No Gods Came. 


    The Minnesota State Arts Board announced the winners of its 2020 Artist Initiative Grants and six of the grantees are part of the Hamline Creative Writing Programs.
