The Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) has named Hamline University alum Kim Hiel ’99, superintendent of Osseo Area Schools, as Minnesota’s 2027 Superintendent of the Year.
Hiel earned her master’s degree in education from Hamline and also served as an adjunct professor from January 2022 to May 2024.
She was selected for her leadership, communication skills, professionalism and community involvement.
Hiel has served as a Minnesota superintendent since 2018 and has been the superintendent of Osseo Area Schools since 2023. Her previous roles include assistant superintendent and elementary principal at Osseo Area Schools, as well as principal and assistant principal at Robbinsdale Area Schools.
At Osseo Area Schools, Hiel has prioritized expanding learning opportunities, closing achievement gaps across the district and strengthening community engagement. Her leadership approach emphasizes listening, empathy and meaningful relationships. In partnership with the school district’s board, Hiel introduced Community Conversations to better understand community priorities and concerns.
“Her ability to bring people together, build trust and navigate complex challenges demonstrates the importance of listening and collaboration in public education,” said MASA Executive Director Matt Hillmann. “Through her focus on academic achievement, community engagement and inclusive leadership, Dr. Hiel is making a meaningful difference for students, families and staff across Osseo Area Schools.”
Hiel is now a candidate for the national title, which will be announced during the American Association of School Administrators National Conference on Education in February 2027.
The Minnesota Superintendent of the Year Award recipient is selected annually through an independent review process administered by MASA. Read the press release here.
