Ryan Larson, assistant professor of criminology, and colleagues recently published an article, “Cumulative Exposure to Police‑Involved Shootings and Mental Health Conditions in Minneapolis, Minnesota,” in the Journal of Urban Health. They find that mental health conditions are more responsive to the cumulative buildup of police shootings in an area as compared to recent incidence of police shootings. This suggests that the initial compounding, spatially concentrated nature of police violence exacts the greatest toll on community mental health.
