How to apply to the School of Business

At Hamline, you can earn your graduate degree without GRE test scores. Already completed the GRE? You still have the option to submit your test score as part of your application.

Priority application deadlines

Applications are processed on a rolling basis. Applications submitted and files completed after deadlines may be reviewed if space permits and enough time exists for a file review. 

We strongly encourage international students to submit all application materials two months in advance of the priority deadline.

Application requirements: Master’s programs

Hamline welcomes applicants whose professional work experience and academic achievements demonstrate their potential to succeed in the rigorous quantitative and qualitative content of our master’s coursework.

To apply for the Master of Business Administration, Master of Management and Leadership, Master of Public Administration, or Master of Science in Business Analytics, please submit the following:

  • Online application (no fee for US residents). Create a new account to apply or complete your application
  • A personal statement, up to three pages, answering the following:
    • Why are you choosing to pursue graduate studies at this time in your career, and what are you hoping to accomplish by doing so?
    • What makes the Hamline graduate program you have chosen appealing to you? What strengths do you seek to strengthen; what challenges do you seek to overcome?
    • At Hamline, we believe in the power of teams. Thus, we teach and have students practice teamwork skills throughout the program. Please describe a past team experience—either excellent or difficult—and what you learned from the experience.  
  • A resume
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate work. If your transcripts are in a language other than English, you must submit both the original and an official or a certified course-by-course English translation. Official transcript of a bachelor's degree must be from a regionally accredited college or university. These should be sent directly from the institution to Graduate Admissions or provided in a sealed, signed envelope. Official electronic copies should be emailed to gradprog@hamline.edu. The Hamline University School of Business reserves the right to require applicants to have their academic records evaluated by an academic credential evaluator.
  • Two recommendation forms detailing your qualifications to pursue advanced study written by people unrelated to you who are familiar with your academic and/or professional history. These forms will be sent to recommenders you identify as part of your online application.
  • International applicants only: For residents outside of the United States, please view the additional requirements for applying to Hamline University.

Application requirements: Doctoral program

To apply for the PhD in Management and Public Service, please submit the following:

  • Online application (no fee for US residents). Create a new account to apply or complete your application
  • A professional resume or curriculum vitae
  • A three- to five-page personal statement addressing the following questions: 
    • What are some of the leadership or sector challenges that you have been grappling with or feel will be an increasing trend moving forward? 
    • What role(s) do―or might―the public, private, and nonprofit sectors play in addressing these challenges? 
    • How do you think the PhD in Management and Public Service will enhance your ability to deal with the issue(s) you discussed above as well as help you build your leadership skills and network?  
  • Official master’s degree transcript or transcript showing 36 credits completed towards a master degree program with 3.0 minimum GPA and a bachelor’s degree transcript from a regionally accredited university. This should be sent directly from the institution to Graduate Admission or provided in a sealed, signed envelope. Official electronic copies should be emailed to gradprog@hamline.edu.
  • Three recommendation forms detailing your qualifications to pursue advanced study written by people unrelated to you who are familiar with your academic and/or professional history. These forms will be sent to recommenders you identify as part of your online application.

Application requirements: Certificate programs

To apply to a School of Business graduate certificate program, please submit the following:

  • Online application (no fee for US residents). Create a new account to apply or complete your application
  • A resume
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate work. If your transcripts are in a language other than English, you must submit both the original and an official or a certified course-by-course English translation. Official transcript of a bachelor's degree must be from a regionally accredited college or university. Application requirements: Sequential degree programs

If you have completed a MBA or MPA degree at Hamline or a JD at Mitchell Hamline within the past five years (or have relevant experience to extend consideration past five years), please submit the following:

  • Sequential degree application form
  • A two-page personal statement stating how an additional degree fits your career goals
  • Two letters of recommendation, preferably one from a Hamline faculty member
  • A current resume

After a review of your materials, the admission committee may require additional items. Students will be notified if more materials are needed.
