Linnette Werner, professor of leadership studies and director of academic leadership programs at Hamline University, presented “The Hidden Patterns of Toxic Leadership and How Women Can Disrupt Them” to the Minnesota chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on October 19.
Drawing on research from her sabbatical, Werner explored how toxic leadership develops, why individuals and organizations may overlook early warning signs, and how harmful leadership behaviors can become normalized within organizations. The presentation also examined strategies for recognizing, preventing, and disrupting toxic leadership, with particular attention to the experiences and opportunities of women.
Werner's research focuses on understanding the patterns and organizational conditions that enable toxic leadership, as well as identifying practical strategies for intervention, organizational repair, and recovery.
