Author Deb Olin Unferth has been selected as Hamline's first Vane Creative Artist, a new signature series celebrating literary citizenship across campus and the community. Join us for one or all of the opportunities for meaningful engagement with the author and her work, specifically her latest novel Earth 7 (Graywolf 2026) which explores climate disaster, grief, and humanity’s relationship with the planet. Events open to the public and the Hamline community include the Water~Stone Review Interview with Deb (Wednesday, 9/30 4PM in GLC100E), an informal book club lunch (Thursday, 10/1, 11:20 West 240), as well as a reading and conversation with Patrick Cottrell '04, author of Afternoon House of a Hermit (HarperCollins 2026), for a conversation about adaptation, loss, and the power of stories to help us understand ourselves and imagine what comes next.
In addition to these events, the English and Communications Studies Department is hosting a Homecoming Happy Hour in Patrick's honor at The BlackHart of Saint Paul on Friday, Oct. 2, 5-7PM. Alumni, friends, faculty, and staff are welcome.
