Violence Prevention Project Research Center receives grant to study MN Red Flag Laws

The Violence Prevention Project Research Center (VPPRC) has received a 2-year grant from the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs to study the effectiveness of Minnesota's Extreme Risk Protection Orders (or "Red Flag Laws").  Minnesota's Extreme Risk Protection Orders went into effect on January 1, 2024, allowing families or law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms from individuals experiencing a crisis and posing a significant danger to themselves or others.  The research study will use records and interviews to understand if the law has helped reduce suicides and homicides in the state. The VPPRC will be hiring a team Hamline students to assist with record coding in the fall of 2026. If interested, please reach out to violence-prevention@hamline.edu.
