Alum Publishes New Story ‘Tom Sawyer’ in Ploughshares

JP Gritton, a 2006 English and creative writing alumnus, has published "Tom Sawyer,” the latest installment of his four-part-novella-in-shorts, in the Winter 2025-26 issue of the national literary journal Ploughshares.  

The novella-in-shorts has been published in stages over several years. Its first installment, “Wonder Boy,” won Literary Matter’s 2019 Meringoff Writing Award for fiction. Subsequent sections, “Referral” and  “Wonder Boy, Revisited,” appeared in the 2024 and 2025 issues of Gavialidae.  

JP Gritton is the author of Wyoming (Tin House Books, 2019), and his essays and short fiction have appeared in Black Warrior Review, Missouri Review, Ploughshares and other journals, He is currently a professor at Duke University.

Ploughshares is a nationally recognized literary magazine founded in 1971. The publications feature poetry, fiction and nonfiction work.
