Trevor Maine is a faculty member in Hamline University's Department of English and Communication Studies and faculty advisor to The Oracle, Hamline's award-winning independent student newspaper. His work with student journalists places him at the intersection of communication, critical inquiry, and public engagement, supporting a publication that gives students opportunities to investigate consequential issues, develop their voices, and contribute to conversations on campus and beyond.
Published since 1888, The Oracle is Minnesota's oldest independent student newspaper. Its staff and individual journalists have earned repeated national recognition from the Associated Collegiate Press, including top-ten honors for the newspaper and news reporting in 2026. Maine's teaching spans communication studies, professional writing and rhetoric, composition and research, and religion. His interdisciplinary background brings together questions about how people communicate, construct knowledge, and make meaning through shared cultural practices. He earned his doctorate at KU Leuven in Belgium, where his dissertation, Knowledge through Worship: The Epistemological Underpinnings of Liturgical Theology, examined the relationship between religious practice and knowledge. He also holds a Master of Theological Studies from Boston University and previously studied at Hamline. His scholarship includes co-editing Approaching the Threshold of Mystery: Liturgical Worlds and Theological Spaces, an international collection exploring the relationship between ritual, theology, and human experience.
