As part of week-long residency, the Music Department presents a concert: Lakansyèl: Music and Dance from Haiti featuring the Afoutayi Music and Dance Company. In Lakansyèl, a Haitian Creole word for rainbow, Afoutayi presents the stories of Haiti through her artistic traditions and the sharing of the rainbow of individuals, artist, healers, warriors and spirits who created and continue to create the history and culture of Haiti. The cultural director of Afoutayi Company is Florencia Pierre who is not only an accomplished dancer, choreographer, singer, actress and educator, but also a Mambo (a Priestess in the Vodou religion) as well. Other members of the Afoutayi company include Artistic Director and choreographer Djenane Saint Juste, Music Director Jeff Pierre, Youth representative Hassen Ortega, dancers Jean Dominique Denis, Jimmy Diligent and Linda Isabelle François, singer Fabienne Denis , storyteller Paula C. Pean and designer Marie Lucia Cadet “Malou”.
