St. Paul Mayoral Candidate Forum

There's just over two weeks until the November elections, when Minnesota voters go to the polls to decide numerous municipal elections around the state. One of the big races is for St. Paul mayor.  Hamline is excited to host a Mayoral Candidate Forum on October 28th at 4p in Anderson 111/12. The invited participants include: Incumbent Mayor Melvin Carter, who is seeking his third term. Carter was first elected mayor in 2017 and won reelection to another four-year term in 2021. During his tenure, Carter pursued a progressive agenda that included medical debt forgiveness, college savings accounts for newborns, and a new sales tax to fund roads and parks. Yan Chen, a biophysicist at the University of Minnesota who ran for St. Paul City Council Ward 1 in 2023. Chen argues that the city is not doing enough to manage growing operational costs while instead raising property taxes at an unsustainable rate. And, State Rep Kaohly Her, a fourth-term St. Paul DFL legislator who decided to enter the race because she felt there hadn’t been enough debate on issues facing the city — whether it be rising property taxes, public safety and development challenges in districts like downtown. We'd love for as many community members--students, staff, faculty--to take part in this civic opportunity to engage with the mayoral candidates on topics and issues of interest to the Hamline community!  Hope to see you Tuesday!
