    Harvey "Smokey" Daniels

    Consulting Author and Educator

     Smokey-Daniels-200x200Harvey "Smokey" Daniels has been a city and suburban classroom teacher and college professor and now works as a national consultant and author on literacy education. In language arts, Smokey is known for his pioneering work on student book clubs, as recounted in Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs and Reading Groups and Minilessons for Literature Circles. His latest bestselling books on content-area literacy are The Curious Classroom; Comprehension & Collaboration, 2nd edition; Upstanders; Subjects Matter, 2nd edition; the Texts and Lessons series; and Content-Area Writing. He is also coauthor of Best Practice, 4th edition, and The Best Practice Video Companion as well as editor of Comprehension Going Forward. Smokey works with elementary and secondary teachers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, offering demonstration lessons, workshops, and consulting, with a special focus on creating, sustaining, and renewing student-centered inquiries and discussions of all kinds. Smokey shows colleagues how to simultaneously build students' reading strategies, balance their reading diets, and strengthen the social skills they need to become genuine lifelong readers. 

    Ralph Fletcher

    Consulting Author and Educator

     Ralph-Fletcher-200x200Ralph Fletcher has been a mentor to teachers and young writers everywhere. He frequently works with young writers in schools and speaks at education conferences in the US and abroad, helping teachers find wiser ways of teaching writing. Ralph is the author of many bestselling teacher professional books, including Writing Workshop: The Essential Guide; Craft Lessons; What a Writer Needs, 2nd edition; and Boy Writers: Reclaiming Their Voices. His most recent professional books include Joy Write: Cultivating High-Impact Low-Stakes Writing (April 2017) and The Writing Teacher's Companion: Embracing Choice, Voice, Purpose and Play (July 2017). Students know Ralph as the award-winning author of more than 20 books for children and young adults, including Fig Pudding, Flying Solo, Twilight Comes Twice, The Writer's Notebook, Marshfield Dreams: When I was a Kid, Also Known as Rowan Pohi, and Guy-Write: What Every Guy Writer Needs to Know. Ralph's second memoir, In-Betweener: More Stories about Growing up in Marshfield, will be published in winter 2019.

    Bao Phi

    Bao Phi ThumbnailBao Phi is an award-winning author of two poetry collections, Song I Sing and Thousand Star Hotel, and one children's book, A Different Pond. He is also program director of events and awards at the Loft Literary Center. A refugee from Vietnam, he is a father and a single co-parent.


    Kate Roberts

    Literacy Consultant and Author


     Kate Roberts is a national literacy consultant, author ,and popular keynote speaker. She taught reading and writing in Brooklyn, New York, and worked as a literacy coach before joining the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project in 2005, where she worked as a lead staff developer for 11 years. Kate is the coauthor (with Christopher Lehman) of the popular Falling in Love with Close Reading and of DIY Literacy (with Maggie Beattie Roberts) along with two Heinemann Unit of Study books on literary essay. Her work with students across the country has led to her belief that all kids can be insightful, academic thinkers when the work is demystified, broken down, and made engaging. To this end, Kate has worked nationally and internationally to help teachers, schools, and districts develop and implement strong teaching practices and curricula. Her blog, indent, is a touchstone for teachers, and she uses social media, particularly Twitter (@teachkate), to help build community and solve problems among her educator peers.
