Realizing a Career: Roland Lang MBA '09

Many people can trace their career aspirations back to a pivotal event. For Roland Lang MBA ’09 that event was a corporate finance course taught by Dan Lehmann in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at Hamline School of Business.

“Dan always pointed out that numbers are easy to read but you need to understand what’s behind those numbers,” Lang said. “You need the critical thinking skills to understand the information or data that you have, and then develop solutions that drive business performance.”

That’s precisely what interested Lang for his future.

Today, he’s living out his career goals and making his mark as the finance leader for 3M’s industrial adhesives and tape division, the company’s largest US subsidiary. He and his team facilitate the division’s budgeting, budget control and project implementation; evaluate the portfolios to pursue based on short and long term opportunities; and report on performance to division and company leadership.

Austrian-born Lang previously worked in strategic supply chain management for Mercedes, a division of Daimler AG, in Germany, before coming to the United States in 2007 with his wife, whom he met as he was finishing his master of science degree in business administration at an Austrian university. She was on a three-week student exchange program for her master’s coursework.

Lang’s relocation led to his career change and enrollment at HSB. “I was looking at various programs in the Cities,” he said. “I already had my master’s degree. The Hamline MBA seemed most complementary to it. It fit my needs best.”

While in the program, Lang also provided technical and curriculum support for graduate courses in the business school.

Lang’s current position is his third at 3M in only five years. With his responsibilities increasing, available advancement prospects, and the company’s willingness to invest in his professional development, he anticipates staying with 3M for the “long haul.”
