Post-Graduate Fellowships

The majority of post-graduate fellowships are awarded to students who are entering graduate school with the intention of earning their MA or Ph.D. Students who are planning on applying to graduate school should apply for a fellowship simultaneously in order to improve their chances of receiving full funding.
A small number of fellowships are not specifically for students who are pursuing a graduate degree. Fulbright, for example, supports one year abroad, which may be spent studying, researching, interning, and/or volunteering.
Avoid changing your life goals to match the mission of a fellowship program. It is important that, in applying, you demonstrate that the fellowship fits into your career plan (even though your career plan may change in a few years) and not the career plan of the ideal candidate for the fellowship. Selection committees can tell by what you did during your college career whether you are really interested in the purpose of the fellowship or not. If you dropped the study of the Spanish language after high school, for example, it will be impossible to convince a Fulbright committee that you need to live in Spain to achieve your career goals.
