• Major Exploration Night: Information for FYSEM Faculty

Attending Major Exploration Night is a required activity for students in Hamline's First Year Seminars, which are designed to help new students become acclimated to the University.

Choosing a major is one of the first significant life-decisions that many college students have to make. Most of us are not born with a sense of our vocational path. For many students, coming to a conclusion about an undergraduate major requires a fair amount of active investigation.

This is why the Career Development Center facilitates Major Exploration Night for all Hamline students to explore and discover majors at Hamline. Our hope is to create a welcoming atmosphere where students might take the first step in their investigative process, along with providing students and faculty the opportunity for open dialogue.

FYSEM Faculty have received an email from the Career Development Center with the Exploring Majors Assignment attached. The guide should be shared via email or uploaded to Blackboard for FYSEM students to access electronically as a Microsoft Word document.

The purpose of this step-by-step guide is to help students explore their own interests and corresponding majors in more depth. It consists of:

    • a new, engaging interest assessment
    • reflective questions
    • electronic resources to explore majors/careers/course descriptions
    • an invitation to attend the open houses at Major Exploration Night
If you have not received the Exploring Majors Assignment, please contact Masha Finn at mfinn03@hamline.edu

All academic departments are set up to host an open house for Major Exploration Night on Tuesday, October 16, 5-7 pm. See the map of locations here
