      Everett Nelson died on July 28, 2016. He majored in English and music at Hamline. He is survived by his daughter, Wilise.

      Foil Miller died on September 20, 2016. He is predeceased by his wife, Naomi; and his sister Carol. He is survived by his children, Bruce and Craig; his sister Ruth; and his two grandchildren. 

      1939

      Dorothy Wiggins Schmid died on January 19, 2017. She is predeceased by her parents, Florence and Clarence, and her husband, John. She is survived by her children, Marsha, Michael, and Mark; and her eight grandchildren. 

      1940

      Jane Rinkel Rollwagen died on January 20, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Philo Browning and she majored in recreation. She is predeceased by her husband, Clare Rollwagen ’39. She is survived by her children, John Rollwagen HDOC ’92, Susan, and Andy; and her eight grandchildren. 

      1942

      Kathleen Lowe Haining died on September 21, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Alpha Rho Delta and she majored in English. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Haining Pohlig ’70, Margaret Haining ’73, Bruce, and Carol; and her seven grandchildren.

      Robert Mullen died on September 4, 2016. He majored in economics at Hamline. He is predeceased by his wife, Jeanne. He is survived by his children, Stephen, Barbara, Bruce, and Sandra.

      Ruth Johnson Shipley died on September 5, 2016. She majored in business administration at Hamline. She is predeceased by her parents; her husbands, Ted and Howard; and her sisters, Charlotte and Eleanor. She is survived by her daughters, Laurel and Gretchen; and her six grandchildren.  

      1945

      Alice Sakai died on August 7, 2016. She majored in economics at Hamline. She is predeceased by her sister, Mary. 

      1947

      Betty Bronson Sandberg died on February 4, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Sigma Gamma Delta and A Cappella Choir, and she majored in music. She is predeceased by her husband, Donald; and her sons, Eric and Mark. She is survived by her sons, Peter and Scott; and her six grandchildren. 

      Beth Brewster Thompson died on January 29, 2017. She majored in nursing at Hamline. She is predeceased by her parents; her husband, Earl; and her sisters Mary and Shirley. She is survived by her children, Dave, Jim, Mark, and Becky; her sister Helen; her four grandchildren; and her two step-grandchildren. 

      Kenneth Thompson died on September 16, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. He majored in physical education and general science. He is predeceased by his wife, Helen; and his infant son, Tris. He is survived by his daughters, Claudia and Anne. 

      1948

      Martha Kenyon Oldfield died on September 5, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Alpha Rho Delta and she majored in mathematics. She is predeceased by her husband, Bruce. She is survived by her brother, William Kenyon ’58; children, Duane and Laurie; her stepchildren, Carl, Helen, and David; and her eight grandchildren. 

      Harry Lindbloom died on July 25, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the baseball team and Alpha Sigma Chi, and he majored in health and physical education. He is predeceased by his wife, Lorraine; and his parents, John and Esther. He is survived by his children, Tim, Susan, and John; and his five grandchildren.  

      1949

      John Ellison died on July 28, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the A Capella Choir and he majored in chemistry. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Everette.  

      James Hopkins died on November 11, 2016. He majored in English at Hamline. He is predeceased by his wife, Millie; his parents, William and Ruth; his brothers, William and Richard; and his granddaughter, Paige. He is survived by his children, Kim, Mark, Brett, and Craig; and his seven grandchildren. 

      Donald Mead died on November 10, 2015. During his time at Hamline, he a member of the swimming and diving and basketball teams, and he majored in psychology. He is predeceased by his wife, Nancy; and his daughter, Stacy. He is survived by his sons, Bruce, Brian, and Greg; and his five grandchildren. 

      Gene Roen Melton died on July 13, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Epsilon Lambda Sigma Society and she majored in art. 

      Fred Wiese died on December 13, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Theta Chi and he majored in economics. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Sargent Wiese ’50.

      1950

      Forrest Brown died on December 2, 2016. He majored in history at Hamline. He is predeceased by his parents, Forrest and Merl; his son Robert; and his brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife, Virley; his children Rosemary, Priscilla, and Forrest III; and his nine grandchildren.

      Asley Hougen died on July 21, 2016. He majored in English at Hamline. He is predeceased by his parents, Lars and Anna; and his siblings, Alf, Leif, Anna, and Melvin. 

      Lois Steinert Stein died on March 21, 2016. She was a medical technician major at Hamline. She is predeceased by her parents; her sister, Geraldine; her daughter Martha; and her husband, William. She is survived by her daughters Carol, Mary, and Catherine; and her four grandchildren.

      Glen Wilcox died on December 7, 2016. He majored in philosophy and religion at Hamline. He is predeceased by his wife, Joan. He is survived by his children, Gail, Frieda, and David; and his three grandchildren.

      Gerald Budde died on February 11, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the football team, Phi Delta, and he majored in chemistry. He is predeceased by his wife, Alice; his parents, Ann and Theodore; and his siblings, Margaret and Robert. He is survived by his children, Jeffrey and Karen; and his three grandchildren. 

      Alice Hunt Noren died on July 7, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Sigma Gamma Delta and the Aquatic League, and she majored in elementary education and history. She is predeceased by her husband, James; and her brother William. She is survived by her brother John; her daughters, Julie and Karen; and her two grandchildren.

      Quentin Cook died on December 20, 2016. He majored in history and political science at Hamline. He is predeceased by his wife, Gwendolyn; and his sister, Margaret. He is survived by his son, Geoffrey.

      Oscar Haddorff died on October 25, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the basketball team, The Oracle, and Torch & Cycle. He majored in education, health, and physical education. He is predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Lora. He is survived by his wife, Marian; his children, Rob, Rick, and Mark; and his three grandchildren. 

      Dean Honetschlager died on July 28, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Pi Gamma Mu, Phi Delta, Alpha Tau Omega, and Torch & Cycle. He majored in education, psychology, and social studies. He is predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann Nichols Honetschlager* ’52. He is survived by his daughters, Beth Honetschlager (faculty emeritus), Kim, and Martha; his brother, Dick; and his five grandchildren. 

      Carolyn Lange VanderWoude died on October 8, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Alpha Phi Theta and the a cappella choir, and she majored in music. She is predeceased by husband, Paul; her parents, Walter and Cecelia; her infant son, Mark; her grandson, Jeremy; and her brother, Robert. She is survived by her children, Jon, Joel, Peter, and Cathleen; and her grandchild.

      Kenneth Krause died on December 18, 2015. He is predeceased by his wife, Ardyth.While at Hamline, he majored in sociology. 

      1954

      Dorothy Frank Dorn died on August 23, 2016. She majored in nursing at Hamline. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert; her daughters Mary and Melissa; and her parents. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen; her children Mike and Marilee; and her three grandchildren. 

      Ralph Wells died on August 10, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the football and hockey teams and Alpha Psi Omega. He was a pre-med major. He is predeceased by his parents, Ronald and Grethel. He is survived by his brother, Keith Wells ’59; and his wife, Ruth.

      Betty Bush Flohr died on August 30, 2016. She majored in nursing at Hamline. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles; and her parents, William and Mildred. She is survived by her children, Laury and Chris; her siblings, Marilyn and Bill; and her four grandchildren. 

      Donald House died July 27, 2016. He majored in nursing at Hamline. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Lyman House ’55; his children, Deb, Steve, John, and David; and his eight grandchildren. 

      Don Oberg died on February 16, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the track and field team and Pi Gamma Mu, and he majored in political science. He is predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Mildred. He is survived by his wife, Janice; his children, Todd, Tanya, Tricia, Trent, and Trynda; and his four grandchildren. 

      1957

      Lowell Clingman died on December 29, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of band and the A Cappella Choir, and he majored in music. He was serving on the CLA Alumni Board of Directors at the time of his death. He is predeceased by his parents, George and Lydia; and his brothers, Alan and Kenneth. He is survived by his wife, Anita; his children, Laurie, Susan, and Roger; his sister, Elaine; and his four grandchildren. 

      1961

      Ardith Gaylord Grover died on September 4, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Epsilon Lambda Sigma Society, the Aquatic League, and Hamline University Student Congress, and she was a cheerleader. She majored in elementary education and social studies. She is predeceased by her parents, John and Joy; and her sister Karen. She is survived by her husband, James; her sons, Ian, Tristan, and Tyson; her sisters Sareva and Joneen; and her 10 grandchildren. 

      1962

      Elisabeth DeJarlais Headley died on June 1, 2016. She was a medical technician major at Hamline. She is survived by her husband, Art; her son, Aaron; and her three grandchildren. 

      Rae Offutt died on January 12, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of The Oracle and the Aquatic League. She majored in English and sociology. She is predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Ruth; her husband, Berch; and her step-grandson, Seth. She is survived by her children, Jon, Jeff, and Lisa; her brother, Bob; her step-children, Brenda, Karen, and Julie; and her 10 grandchildren.  

      1963

      Terry Nelson died on November 14, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Theta Chi; Torch & Cycle; the basketball, football, and tennis teams; and the A Cappella Choir. He majored in elementary education and psychology. He is survived by his wife, Connie; his sons, Toben Nelson ’91, Cory Nelson ’94, Jayme Nelson ’99, Marc Nelson ’02; and his nine grandchildren. 

      1964

      Bette Gerlitz Maybury died on September 4, 2016. She was a biology and medical technician major at Hamline. She is survived by her husband, James; her children, Cathy and Matt; her siblings, Carol, Curt, Susan, and Gail; and her grandchild. 

      Edward McLean died on December 15, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Alpha Psi Omega and the concert band, and he majored in mathematics. He is predeceased by his brother, Robert. He is survived by his sister, Marilyn. 

      1965

      Richard Haugland (also HDOC ’06) died on October 5, 2016. While at Hamline he majored in chemistry. He received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the CLA Alumni Association in 1998, and in 2004 he was featured in the book, 150 Lives That Make a Difference : 150 Years of Hamline University - 1854-2004 He is survived by his former wife, Rosaria Haugland HDOC ’06; his son, Alexander; and his daughter, Marina.

      William Williams died on September 15, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the basketball team and Tau Kappa Epsilon, and he majored in economics. He is predeceased by his parents, Kay and William Williams, Sr.’32; his stepmother, Lucy; and his brother, Dick. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Smith Williams ’67; his children, Katherine Williams ’95 and Mike; and his sister, Mary Kay.

      Joyce Hansen Carlson died on October 6, 2016. She majored in education and mathematics at Hamline. She is survived by her partner, Ron; and her brothers, Bob and Don. 

      1968

      John Lindgren died on October 23, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon and the wrestling team, and he majored in economics. He is survived by his children, Krista, Kirk, and John; his siblings, Jill, Gerry, and Jeff; and his two grandchildren. 

      Robert Davidson died on December 22, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Torch & Cycle and the A Cappella Choir, he received the G. H. Bridgman Poetry Prize, and he majored in music. He is survived by his sister, Peggy.

      Lennox Danielson died on October 13, 2016. He majored in speech and theatre arts at Hamline. He is survived by his wife, Jacki Thomas Danielson ’75; and his sisters, Sally, Judy, and Margaret. 

      1974

      Nancy Carlson died on November 13, 2016. She majored in economics and social studies at Hamline. She is predeceased by her parents, Ken and Elaine. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; her brothers, Kenneth and Ted; her children, Carl, Samuel, Jeffrey, Lynn, Daniel, Shannon, Phillip, Elizabeth, Kristina, and Joyce; and her 12 grandchildren.

      Timothy Austin died on November 21, 2016. He majored in English at Hamline. He is predeceased by his mother, Marjorie. He is survived by his father, Gunther; and his brother, Mark.

      Myra Halpin died on January 16, 2017. She majored in public administration at Hamline. She is predeceased by her siblings, Alice, Charles, and Ellen. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Helen. 

      1991

      Mark Youngquist died on October 13, 2016. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the hockey team, and he majored in management and political science. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Leabelle. He is survived by his wife, Darla; his children, Laura and Courtney; and his siblings, Karen, Chuck, and Paul.

      Victoria Plugaru died on December 20, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of the Student Alumni Board and Model United Nations, and she majored in economics and management. She is predeceased by her father, Loan. She is survived by her husband, Nick; her children, Luke, Landon, and Mikayla; her mother, Nadia; and her brother, Doru.

      Jean Bergfeldt Cassell Mayhew died on October 7, 2016. She majored in nonprofit management at Hamline. She is predeceased by her mother, Marilyn, and her uncle, Russell. She is survived by her husband, William; her daughters, Samantha, Allison, Alexandra, and Isabelle; her father, Walter; and her sisters, Sarah and Nancy.

      Judy Hanson Gentz (MAED ’03) died on September 29, 2016. She is predeceased by her parents, Warren and Carol. She is survived by her husband, Ron; and her daughters, Jennifer and Amy. 

      FACULTY

      Nancy Shaw Desmond died on November 11, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she taught a range of undergraduate education courses, served as chair of her department, and as associate dean of the School of Education between February 2009 and June 2010. She is predeceased by her mother, Ann; her father, Richard; and her sister, Karrin. She is survived by her wife, Sue; and her brother, Scott. 

      William Vincent Williams died on January 23, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he served as the William Kahert Chair of Economics until his retirement in 1992. He is predeceased by his parents, Anne and Vincent; his brother, John; his sister, Janice; and his half-sister, Bonni. He is survived by his wife, Bea; his children, Michael, Donald, Blythe, and Jeffrey; and his six grandchildren.

      Emerson Colaw died on October 11, 2016. He received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1985, and was an emeritus trustee of Hamline University. He is predeceased by his wife, Jane. He is survived by his daughters, Deb, Marcie, and Prudy; his son, David; and his eight grandchildren. 

      Lewis Lehr died on July 30, 2016. He was an emeritus trustee to Hamline. He is predeceased by his wife, Doris. He is survived by his children, Donald Lehr ’74, John, Mary, and William; and his seven grandchildren.

      Huston Smith died on December 30, 2016. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Kendra; his daughters, Gael and Kimberly; and his three grandchildren.

      Leslie Turner died on October 22, 2016. She is survived by her husband, John Turner, a Hamline University life trustee; her children, Jeff, Marcie, Jim, and Andrew; her nine grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; and her siblings, Nancy and Fritz.
