    UNDERGRADUATE

    1942

    Mary Dahlgren Johnson died on May 7, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Philo Browning, National Collegiate Players, Aquatic League, and Torch & Cycle, and she majored in economics. She is predeceased by her husband, Newt; her parents, Paul and Eda; her brother Clark; a daughter; and a granddaughter. She is survived by her brother Paul Dahlgren ’49; her sons, Bruce and Todd; her daughter Marilee; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

    1943

    Harriet Anderson Bierman died on April 28, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she majored in English literature. She is predeceased by her sister, Ruth Holter ’37. She is survived by her children, Robert Bierman ’74, Joan, Elaine, and Tim; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

    Genevieve Christgau Chapman died on March 10, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she majored in nursing. She is predeceased by her husband, Jack; her parents, Albert and Ruth; and her brothers, Merton and Doug. She is survived by her sister, Ilene Rice ’47; seven children; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

    Catherine Dower-Gold died on February 17, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of the A Cappella Choir and Epsilon Lambda Sigma Society and she majored in music. She is predeceased by her parents, Marie and Lawrence; her sister, Frances; and her husband, Arthur. She is survived by her brother, Paul.

    Lois Garrett Beckstrand died on February 26,2017. During her time at Hamline, she majored in nursing. She is predeceased by her parents, Harold Robert and Lillian; her husband, Wendell; her sons John and Jeffrey; her sister, Elizabeth; her brother, James; her former husband, Patrick; and a great-grandchild. She is survived by her children Susan, Sara, Jennifer, Naomi, Patricia, James, Gary, Robert, and Richard; 29 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. 

    Evelyn Ruotsinoja Maki died on March 23, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Philo Browning and she majored in medical technology. She is predeceased by her husband, Clinton; her parents, William and Jennie; her son David; her sister, Marian; and her brother, Arnold. She is survived by her sister, Elsie; her children Kristine, Alison, Philip, and Mark; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. 

    Jean Joul Thompson died on March 20, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she majored in nursing. She is predeceased by her parents, Harry and Ellen; her brother, Orville; and a granddaughter. She is survived by her husband, Thomas; her brother, Burton; her children, Greg, Susan, Mary, and Patty; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

    Gerald Howe died on March 5, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he majored in General Science. He is predeceased by his wife, Elsie; and his father, Walter. He is survived by his children, Laura and Jerry; and two grandsons. 

    Clare Karsten died on March 7, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he majored in English. He is predeceased by his wife, Martha; his parents, Bill and Sylvia; his siblings, Doris, Willard, and Lowell; his sons Blaine and an infant; and a great-grandson. He is survived by his children Paul and Janene; his grandson Jason Karsten ’00 and seven other grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

    William Malmo Sr. died on February 8, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Theta Chi and Beta Kappa Fraternity. He is predeceased by his parents, Helen and Walter; his first wife, Marjorie; his second wife, Dorothy; his daughter Nancy; his sister, Betty; and his brother, Don. He is survived by his son, William Malmo, Jr. ’73; his daughter Kathy; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.   

    1949 

    Richard Jorgensen died on April 15, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Barb; his children Mary, Susan, Jean, Mark, Nancy, and Paul; and nine grandchildren.

    Vernon Clair Morrison died on May 29, 2017. He is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife Beatrice; daughters Mary and Jeanne; and four grandchildren.

    Joyce Von Lehe Swenson died on February 17, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of the Epsilon Lambda Sigma Society, Torch & Cycle, and The Oracle and she majored in education and English. She is predeceased by her brother, Donald; and her sister, Doris. She is survived by her husband, Gordon Swenson ’50; her sons, William and John; and three grandchildren. 

    Charlotte Riley Nelson died on March 15, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Alpha Rho Delta and she majored in music. She is predeceased by her parents, Walter and Nina; her husband, Harry; and a granddaughter. She is survived by her sons, Timothy Nelson ’76 and Mark; her brother, Russell Riley ’61; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.  

    1950 

    Gwen Jester Buteau died on January 17, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she majored in art.

    Harold Dahlgren died on March 16, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Theta Chi, the football team, and majored in education and general science. He is predeceased by his parents, Myles and Carrie; his sister, Arlene; and his brother, Bud. He is survived by his wife, Mary Dahlgren ’53; his children, Debra, David, and Allen; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

    Daniel Klas died on May 6, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he majored in history. He is survived by his brother, Robert Klas Sr. ’52; his wife, Mary Louise; his daughters Mary, Kathy, Barbara, and Trish; his son, John; his sisters, Janet and Alice; and 13 grandchildren. 

    David Reeves died on April 3, 20117. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Chi and he majored in economics. He is predeceased by his brother, Melvin Reeves ’44; his parents, Milton and Doris; and his wife, Amaryllis.

    James Root died on March 13, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the golf, hockey, and football teams, and he majored in physical education. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Helena; his siblings; and his granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his children, Deborah, Stephen, Elizabeth, and Cynthia; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. 

    Donald Sheffield died on April 12, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Chi and he majored in speech. He is predeceased by his wife, Joan M. Sheffield ’50. He is survived by his daughters, Deb, Laurie, and Cindy; and his two grandchildren. 

    James Thompson died on April 18, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he majored in economics. He is survived by his children, Jean, Jim, John, and Mary; and two grandchildren. 

    1951 

    Dorothy Ann Rowe Hollerbach died on March 17, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Torch & Cycle and the Epsilon Lambda Sigma Society and she majored in sociology. She is predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Louis; her children, David and Luann; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

    Bill Vanderbie died on March 15, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Phi Delta, and he majored in chemistry. He is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Vanderbie ’54; and his parents, Frank and Maude. He is survived by his children, Mark, Mike, Matthew, and Mary Jane; his grandson, Jamie Leal ’08 and seven other grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

    John Curtis died on May 27, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, the football team, and majored in business administration and economics. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Susan; and sister, Joan. He is survived by his wife, Joan; children Fred, Mike, and Elizabeth, stepchildren Julie and Jeri; and eight grandchildren.

    Margaret Fabel died on February 20, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she majored in nursing. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy; and her brothers, Kenneth and Myron. 

    Marion Renander Stafne died on March 23, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she majored in nursing.

    Wanda Manthey Jordan died on December 18, 2016. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of the National Collegiate Players and Philo Browning and she majored in speech and theatre. She is predeceased by her children Holly and Pamela. She is survived by her husband, Chris; her siblings, Marilyn, Carolyn, Paul, Thomas, and Virginia; her children Kyle, Frank, and Steve; and 10 grandchildren.

    John Ekberg died on January 27, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Chi and Alpha Kappa Delta and he majored in social studies. He is survived by his sister, Karen.

    1957 

    Richard Dahl died on March 26, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the football team and he majored in economics. He is predeceased by his parents, Arnold and Emma. He is survived by his wife, Pat; his children, Robert, Sue, and Don; and six grandchildren.

    1958 

    Charles Danger died on April 29, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he majored in business administration and history. He is predeceased by his parents, Alice and Ralph; and his brother, Bob. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann; his sons, Scott, Paul, and Mark; and seven grandchildren. 

    John Herzog died on March 16, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Chi and he majored in education and English. He is predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Irene; his brother, James; and his sister Eleanor. He is survived by his wife, Carmen Dukes Herzog ’59; his sons, Kurt and Eric; his sister Carol; and three grandchildren.

    Wayne Leisman died on May 1, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he majored in sociology. He is predeceased by his parents, Milton and Mavis; his brother, Ken; and his daughter Terezie May. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his son, Mark; his daughters Cheryl and Suzanne; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    1959 

    Robert Hill died on February 22, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the track and field team and he majored in business administration and economics. He is predeceased by his wife, Verna; his parents; his brother, Dick; and his sister Darlene. He is survived by his sisters Delores, Marlys, Janice, and Judy; nine children; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    Anita Namock Lillquist died on February 17, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she majored in nursing. She is predeceased by her parents, Merrill and Marjorie. She is survived by her husband, Arthur; her stepchildren, Karen, Keith, and David; her brother, Keith; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

    Dennis Boom died on May 20, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Alpha Psi Omega. He is predeceased by his wife Elaine and his parents. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth and three grandchildren.

    1963 

    Dennis Ehlers died on March 1, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon and the golf team and he majored in economics. He is predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Josephine. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ehlers ’64; his son, Michael; his daughter, Kristen; his brother, Fred; his sister, Karen; and several grandchildren.

    Barbara Finkel Drealan died on April 8, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Phi Theta. She majored in medical technology. She is predeceased by her parents, Albert and Carrie; her brother, Leon; and her sister, Janice. She is survived by her husband, David; and her son, William.

    John William Glynn died on April 25, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of Theta Chi, football, and theatre and he majored in education and English. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his stepchildren, Chip, Kara, Mitchell, and Michelle; and several grandchildren. 

    Marcia Galles Waugh died on March 5, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Epsilon Lambda Sigma Society and she majored in sociology. She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas. She is survived by her husband, Clark; her daughter, Amy; and her sister, Julie.

    Richard Parssinen died on February 25, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the baseball, basketball, and golf teams and Theta Chi. He is survived by his wife, Sue; his children, Christine, Katie, and Scott; and five grandchildren. 

    1969 

    Lee Urness died on May 19, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the basketball team and Tau Kappa Epsilon and he majored in biology. He is predeceased by his wife, Kathy; his parents, Howard and Maxine; and his brother, Donald. He is survived by his sister, Mary; his children, Tom, Lisa, Matt, and Kari; and two grandchildren.

    Dale Alberts died on May 16, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the golf, basketball, and baseball teams and he majored in economics. He is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Arvilla; and his brother, Jim. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his sister, Sharron; his children, Gretchen, Libby, Andrew, and Stephen; and four grandchildren.

    1972 

    Barbara Schaeppi Hildreth died on April 18, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she was a member of Alpha Phi Theta. She is predeceased by her parents, William and Marian, and her brother, Gordon. She is survived by her husband James; stepson Everett; and two grandchildren.

    1981  

    John Klein died on April 16, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he majored in art. He is predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Clifford; and his brother, Mike. He is survived by his siblings, Mary Beth, Tom, and Kevin; his children, Aaron and Sarah; and two grandchildren.  

    2011 

    Austun Tavis died on February 27, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a member of the hockey team and he majored in management. He is predeceased by his father, Gary; and his daughter, Laelynn. He is survived by his wife, Alison; his mother, Joy; his sisters, Amber and Aaryn; and his grandparents, Richard, Phyllis, John, and Joleen.

    1986 

    Jean Fenrich Idstrom MALS ’86 died on April 24, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she received her masters in liberal studies. She is predeceased by her father, Herbert; her mother, Christine; and her brother, Gary. She is survived by her daughter, Devon; and several grandchildren.

    FACULTY AND STAFF

    Rodney Anderson died on April 20, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was an adjunct professor at Hamline School of Law. He is predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Alice; and his brother, Keith. He is survived by his wife, Julie; his children, Jennifer and Eric; and two grandchildren. 

    Millie Binder Flies died on April 10, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she served as chief of staff to the president of Hamline University. She is predeceased by her parents, Art and Rachel; and her sisters, Anne and Carol. She is survived by her husband, Ken; her siblings, Don, Arlene, and Jean; her sons, Elliott, Phun, and JB; and eight grandchildren.

    Donald Irish died on April 14, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he taught students for 22 years. He is predeceased by his first wife, Betty; and his second wife, Marjorie. He is survived by his daughters, Terry, Gail, and Sharon; his stepchildren, Muriel and Martin; and three grandchildren.

    Anita Segador Beaton died on March 11, 2017. During her time at Hamline, she taught in the Master of Education program. She is predeceased by her husband, James; her parents, Encarnación and Nicolas; and her sisters, Placeres, Mary, and Mildred. She is survived by her children, Jehanne and Andrew; and four grandchildren. 

    Lowell Weber died on March 10, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was alumni director and a tennis coach. He is predeceased by his wife, Carol; and his parents, Earl and Velma. He is survived by his daughters, Andrea Gossett ’84, Susie, and Chris; his sister, Jean; and seven grandchildren.

    Adam Zwart died on June 16, 2017. During his time at Hamline, he was a project coordinator in Facilities Services. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Carol; and brothers Benjamin and Zachary.

    FRIENDS

    Gordon Richards died on May 15, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; children, Stephen, Rebekah, Elizabeth, and Deborah; his seven grandchildren; and sisters, Phyllis, Joyce, and Janice.

    Orem Robbins died on May 1, 2017. He was a Hamline Life Trustee. He is predeceased by his wife, Annette Strand Scherer Robbins ’36, and his stepson Scott Scherer ’65. He is survived by his stepson Greg.

    Joshua Tilsen died on April 18, 2017. He is survived by wife Faith Latimer (ALUMNAE?) daughters Rosalind Tilsen ’17, Sophia and Irene Katey.
