We Stand With Somalia Event

Letter from Dean of Student Affairs Office, Hedgeman Center for Student Diversity Initiatives and Community, Wesley Center for Spirituality, Service and Social JusticeĀ

Over the weekend with heavy hearts, many of us learned, listened and watched footage of the horrific explosion in Mogadishu, Somalia, and our grief, anger, confusion, and questions reemerged in light of this, the newest tragedy that has taken lives from our global family. For many members of our university and surrounding communities, this tragedy hits us in a very personal, profound way. Many of us have direct ties to Somalia and hold Somali people dear in our hearts, including Bloomington native Ahmed Abdikarim Eyow who has lost his life in last week's explosion.

Locally and nationally, our individual and collective grief is a difficult one, a painful one. Sadly, our current situation is not much different than other recent tragedies, including natural and human-made disasters. But, WE can make our present and our future better across racial, socio-economic, gender, sexual orientation, religious and geographical differences. It must start with each of us, as individuals, becoming more educated, informed, connected, concerned and brave so we can join the collective WE that is intent on ensuring inclusion, safety and understanding for everyone. As we continue to work for the future we envision, it is critical that each of us take care of ourselves and each other especially in those places where we find ourselves pained, tired, hopeless, confused, angry, numb, complacent, lost or sad. We encourage you to be in community and to do those things that bring you comfort, joy and a sense of wholeness. During what may be a difficult, confusing time for many of us, it is important for us to reach out to friends, family members, neighbors, university community members for support and to offer support to those who need you.

Recognizing that communities come together in times of great joy and also great pain, we invite members of the Hamline University community to gather in solidarity to celebrate and show the support for all the lives lost and impacted by the recent terrorists' attack in Somalia.
