Preservice Teacher Preparation
This branch of the ELM Project focuses on preparing Hamline
University pre-service mainstream teachers to incorporate best practices
for ELs in their instructional lessons by the time they are licensed
teachers (typically 1-2 years after taking the course).
Best practices
addressed in this course include: creating a comfortable environment,
how first language supports acquisition of English, the second language
acquisition process, legal obligations of schools in the instruction of
ELs, WIDA assessments and supports, best practices in teaching English
learners, language objectives that support content, providing
opportunities for oral and written language practice, and understanding
the goal of academic English language proficiency. Starting in January
2017, all Hamline University initial teacher licensure candidates are
required to take this two-credit course.
