MA in TESOL Program Details
Total Credits: 36 (28 in core courses and 8 in area of concentration)

- ESL 8100 - Linguistics for Language Teachers* (4 credits)
- ESL 8120 - Pedagogical Grammar and Discourse* (4 credits)
- ESL 8130 - Exploring Learning Language and Second Language Acquisition* (4 credits)
- ESL 8110 - Language and Society* (4 credits)
- ESL 8140 - Introduction to Research in TESOL (2 credits)
- ESL 8160 - Phonetics and Phonology (2 credits)
- ESL 8150 - Advanced Linguistic Analysis (4 credits)
- GED 8490: Capstone Project or GED 8495: Capstone Thesis (4 credits)
Candidates need to show that they have learned a language other than English. The minimum requirement is either two years in high school or two semesters in college, documented with a transcript. Candidates whose first language is not English, or who have acquired another language in other ways, should discuss their case with Hamline staff.
Areas of Concentration
Teaching Adults: (8 credits)
The MA-TESOL with an Adult concentration prepares you for a dynamic global and local career working with community colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, international corporations and NGOs, private language schools in teaching or administration, community-based ESL programs, and Adult Basic Education programs.

Teaching K-12: (8 Credits)
This concentration is for candidates who are also pursuing a K-12 ESL teaching license. The additional MA course work prepares you to effectively advocate for learners, collaboratively address academic language needs, and lead within your school and beyond. (*Courses with asterisks can be applied to the Minnesota K-12 ESL teaching license. All teachers must meet licensing requirements in the state where they teach.)
