    The certificate program provides specific study of reading and writing theory and practice for both beginning and experienced teachers.

    Topics include: comprehension strategies, writing workshop, literature circles, poetry, integrating literature into the curriculum, emergent literacy, reading and writing in the content areas, literary genres, assessing reading and writing, critical literacy, balanced literacy, and many more.

    The timeline and pace of the program is self-directed and new courses are added frequently to afford variety and depth. Completion of this certificate provides a valuable professional credential for teachers interested in the teaching of reading and writing.

    Admission Requirements

    • Online application (no fee)

    • Official transcript of a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 2.5 from a regionally-accredited college or university. This should be sent directly from the institution to Graduate Admission or provided in a sealed, signed envelope. You do not have to supply transcripts for courses taken at Hamline University

    Courses

    The Literacy Certificate for the Teaching of Reading and Writing requires 12 semester credits: 5 reading, 4 writing, and 3 elective. Because our course offerings are always changing to keep up with what is new and exciting in the field, the certificate is designed as a 'build your own' program. Most LANG 6000 and 7000 level courses will fulfill requirements. Please contact gcs@hamline.edu with questions about course offerings.

    Certificate Completion

    Once you have completed the requirements of the Literacy for the Teaching of Reading and Writing Certificate, you may request your printed certificate. Orders are processed at the end of fall, spring, and summer semesters; you can expect to receive your certificate four to six weeks after you submit your request.
