     Required Courses (12 credits)
    • ESL 7788: ESL Learner Mainstream Classroom, 2 credits (available summer only)
    • ESL 8110: Language and Society, 4 credits (available fall/spring/summer)
    • ESL 7753: Test & Evaluation English Language Learners, 2 credits (available winter only)
    • ESL 7770: Critical Praxis in TESOL, 4 credits (available fall/summer) this class was previously offered as ESL 7755

    Courses may be taken in any order.

    All coursework in the ESL for Mainstream Teachers Certificate except the introductory course may be applied to Hamline School of Education's K-12 ESL Additional Licensure, Master of Arts in English as a Second Language, or Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) programs.

    These courses were designed with requirements of the Learning English for Academic Proficiency and Success Act (LEAPS) of 2014 in mind. They address best teaching practices in meeting the varied needs of English Learners and SLIFE and other language from MN statutes 122A.09 Subd.4(g-i) and 122A.18 Subd. 4(b). Please check with your district for approval.

    To apply for admission to the ESL for Mainstream Teachers Certificate program, please submit the following:

    • Online application (no fee).
    • Official transcript of a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 2.5 from a regionally accredited college or university. This should be sent directly from the institution to Graduate Admission or provided in a sealed, signed envelope. You do not have to supply transcripts for courses taken at Hamline University.
