Master of Fine Arts Program Details: Courses
All students in the program are required to complete 48 academic credits.

Our MFA courses offer a writing-focused, multi-genre exploration designed to widen and deepen student awareness and knowledge of the literary world. Read full course descriptions.
Core Seminar (4 credits)
Two of the following (8 credits)
- Groundings in the Craft: Fiction (4 credits)
- Groundings in the Craft: Poetry (4 credits)
- Groundings in the Craft: Creative Nonfiction (4 credits)
Three workshops: two in the genre student is specializing in, and one outside the genre student is specializing in (12 credits)
- Workshop in Fiction
- Workshop in Poetry
- Workshop in Creative Nonfiction
- Multi-Genre Workshops
One pre-professional course (4 credits)
- Theory & Pedagogy of Teaching Composition
- Literary Publishing: Water~Stone Review
Three elective courses (12 credits)
- Elective credits can include any of the writing courses listed above, as well as non-writing courses like Composition Theory and Pedagogy, The Creative Process, and more.
